1858-1928 Dutch Jan Toorop Gallery He moved to the Netherlands in 1872 and took a course in drawing at the Polytechnische School in Delft (1876-9). He also studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1880-82) and at the Ecole des Arts D?coratifs in Brussels (1882-5). In Amsterdam he joined the St Lukas Society, and in Belgium he was a founder-member of Les XX in 1884. Although he had met Jozef Isra?ls in 1880 and respected the style of the Hague school, he was more attracted by what he saw in Brussels, particularly work by French artists. His portraits of 1884 are painted in an Impressionist style. With other members of Les XX he trained himself in plein-air; he learnt from James Ensor how to apply colours with a palette knife and how to use white with the same intensity as other colours. Jacob d'Agar, född 1642 i Paris som Jacques d'Agar, död 1715 i Köpenhamn, var en fransk porträttmålare. D'Agar var elev till Ferdinand Vouet. 1675 blev han ledamot av konstakademien i Paris; men efter det nantesiska ediktets upphävande 1685, i egenskap av reformert och därigenom utesluten och tvungen att gå i landsflykt, begav han sig över England till Köpenhamn, där han av Kristian V utnämndes till hovmålare. Mycket anlitad av hovet undanträngde han med sitt franska maner det dittills i Danmark härskande holländska porträttmåleriet. Ett av hans många porträtt av Kristian V finnes på Gripsholm.
Karel Purkyne
(1834-1868) was a Czech painter. He was one of the most prominent proponents of realism in Czech art in the second half of the 19th century. He was the son of the physiologist and anatomist Jan Evangelista Purkyne, and developed an interest in art while still young. Early influences included the Baroque painters Karel Škreta and Petr Brandl and the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. He spent a year in Munich studying with Johann Baptist Berdelle before traveling to Paris, where he worked with Thomas Couture; there he copied paintings by Old Masters and encountered the work of contemporary French artists. He was particularly struck by the works of Gustave Courbet. Upon returning to Prague, Purkyne became known primarily as a portraitist, though a handful of works in other genres are known. He also made a name for himself as an organizer of artistic events and as an art critic.
